Ángel Ramón Barchini, former ambassador of Qatar, posted the following on his social networks; “convinced that together we will build a better Paraguay.” These words were accompanied by an image where he is seen embracing Horacio Cartes and Santiago Peña, among other political figures in the former president’s house.
The politician and diplomat left Doha, the capital of Qatar last Sunday, April 17, after a month of having resigned from the position he held for eight years.
In March, he announced that his resignation came after several political friends offered him the opportunity to lead a third front within the ANR (independent of Horacio Cartes and Hugo Velázquez). However, he finally decided to ally himself with the former.
ACHIEVEMENTS
In a note sent to Euclides Acevedo, National Foreign Minister, where he presented his resignation, the politician mentioned the achievements obtained through his administration. He cited the openings of the markets in Qatar, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia. He also donated US$10 million from the Qatari government for Paraguayan education and sent 100,000 doses of vaccines against Covid-19 from the same country.
BACKGROUND
The politician is linked to the figures of Luis Castiglioni and Javier Zacarías Irún. In 2008, when Barchini was a Mercosur parliamentarian, he decided to support Castiglioni’s candidacy, under the “Vanguardia Colorada” movement, for the presidency of the Republic for the period 2008-2013.
However, after the defeat against Blanca Ovelar in the internal elections, two years later he publicly announced his resignation from the movement. From then on, he joined Javier Zacarías Irún’s team in 2010. At that time, Horacio Cartes announced his departure from the sports leadership to join the ANR.
When asked by the press about the then-successful sports leader’s participation in the ANR, he stated that “Cartes should be given an honor session, since he did a lot of good for the party.”
This affirmation took place after the financial support provided by the businessman for the strengthening of the Colorado Party.
At the beginning of April 2019, Blas Llano, a liberal senator but related to Chartism, highlighted Barchini’s work as ambassador. What makes us suppose between the former diplomat and the leader of Honor Colorado dates even from the businessman’s entry into politics.
