MIAMI, United States. — The Spanish footballer of FC Barcelona Gerard Piqué today announced his retirement from football in a video posted on social networks.

“Now that the dreams of a child have been fulfilled, I have decided that it is time to close this circle. I always said that after Barça there would be no other team. And so it will be. This Saturday will be my last game at the Camp Nou. I will become one more culé”, said the player, who will end his career with the national team break prior to the 2022 Qatar World Cup.

In his message, the Catalan defender celebrated the possibility of having played with the best players in the world. He also expressed his gratitude to his club, Barça, in whose ranks he played for more than a decade.

“For weeks, months, many people have been talking about me. Now I’m going to speak. From a very young age I didn’t want to be a footballer, I wanted to be a Barça player”, said Piqué, whose contract with the Barça entity ended at the end of this season.

The player’s announcement generated reactions from fellow footballers, who highlighted his career and commitment to the Catalan club.

“Thanks for everything Geri. I am in shock. It has been very unfair to you, few have defended the Barça shirt as you have. I can always tell that I played by your side, a privilege. I love you friend”, wrote former defender Carles Puyol on social networks.

Trained as a footballer in the FC Barcelona academy, Gerard Piqué went through Zaragoza and Manchester United before returning to the culé cast in 2008 and consecrating himself as one of the best players in the world in his position.

Barça’s “3” leaves football with an enviable track record that includes 8 La Liga titles, 1 Premier League, 4 Champions Leagues, 7 King’s Cups, 3 European Super Cups, 6 Spanish Super Cups, 1 Euro Cup and 1 World Cup.
