The writer George Lamming, one of the most recognized voices of the literature Caribbean, died this Saturday at the age of 94 in Barbados, media reports.
The reports also highlight words of Mia Amor Mottley, Prime Minister of Barbados, who specified that an official funeral will be held in tribute to the writer “who has been an essential part of regional literature.”

Advisor and collaborator of the Center for Caribbean Studies of the House of the Americas, the Barbadian writer was sworn in 1976 for the literary award of that institution, whose publishing fund published his works The pleasures of exile Y In the castle of my skinthe latter one of his best-known novels.
In this regard, the Prime Minister of Barbados recalled that “although he wrote several novels and received many awards, none of his works is as close to the Barbadian soul as his initial text, In the castle of my skinwritten in 1953, still today required reading for every young Caribbean.”
“Barbados will miss him,” sentenced the politician, while numerous figures and institutions have expressed their condolences to the writer’s family and friends, and have highlighted the legacy he leaves for Caribbean and universal literature.
Appointed Doctor honorary cause from the University of Havana, among other centers of higher learning, Lamming was also a resident writer and lecturer at the University of the West Indies, a visiting professor at the University of Texas, the University of Pennsylvania and Brown University, in addition to teaching conferences in academic and cultural centers in different countries.
