The deputy governor with the most seniority within the Governing Board assured that there has been no type of interference, much less in Banxico’s decisions.
“I did not know that it was still confidential information, simply the president, who always has to be informed, did not know that it was still confidential information,” he added.
Irene Espinosa revealed that the information was received from the Secretary of the Treasury, Rogelio Ramírez de la O.
“The federal executive is the one who defines what information they give (to the president). The secretary of the Treasury normally reports to the president on his activities,” he explained.
Espinosa said that the president’s statement did not cause uncertainty about Banxico’s autonomy, it was just an isolated comment but that he should take care of his opinions when making them public.
Deputy Governor Gerardo Esquivel also supported Espinosa’s statements and said that the decision to raise the reference rate is a complete freedom of the members of the Governing Board and that the credibility of the body is not put at risk.
“The autonomy of this institution, which is a pillar of the credibility of the Mexican economy, is not at risk and under no circumstances and in no sense,” he said in an interview with Radio Formula.
