The banking union decided to call a strike this Tuesday from 3:00 p.m. that involves all private banking in Montevideo that is located between Paraguay street and Luis Alberto de Herrera avenue. The reason responds to the dismissal of 16 Citibank workersannounced in late 2021.

“Given the reaffirmation of 16 dismissals by Citibank after completing a multimillion-dollar business, the Council of the Private Financial Sector of AEBU decided to continue its mobilizations,” the union said in a statement.

The mobilization will be concentrated in front of the Citibank offices, in the World Trade Center.

The intention of the union is to negotiate to reverse the dismissal of the 16 officials. To do this, it focuses its strategy on the other private banks, which have no problems with the union, “pressure” Citibank to sit down at a negotiating table for the situation of 16 workers affiliated with the union (out of a total of 29). ) who will be laid off once the sale of their offshore unit Citi Asesores to Insigneo is finalized, union sources told the Citywire site.

Last week there was a surprise stoppage in the entire sector. The strike, which took place on Wednesday, paralyzed banking activity in the Old City and part of the Center, and the stoppage of tasks continued until midnight. This coincided with the closing of the month, the tasks on credits, forecasts and accounting movements that were pending, circumstances that must be assumed by the executive directors of the banks.
