Banco Popular: Tower works exclusively with clean energy

Banco Popular: Torre funciona exclusivamente con energía limpia

The Dominican Popular Bank informed that the complex of its corporate headquarters Torre Popular, which houses five business buildings, is already a building that has been operating exclusively with clean energy of photovoltaic origin since the beginning of the year, which is acquired from the generation company AES Dominicana.

With this announcement, framed in the celebration of the World Energy Saving Daywhich is commemorated every October 21, the banking entity deepens its efforts to extend sustainability criteria in its business model, in compliance with its commitment to the United Nations Principles for Responsible Banking.

Specifically, the green energy is produced by one of the photovoltaic solar parks of AES Dominicana, which is distributed throughout the Interconnected Energy System (SENI) under a supply contract, whose annual average provision is 9,300 megawatts.

The contractwhich entered into full execution in January 2022, will have provided average estimated savings on the electricity bill of more than USD$132,576.

Furthermore, thanks to the use of this sustainable energy source, Banco Popular will annually reduce its carbon footprint by 5,900 tons, equivalent to planting 592,131 trees each year.

In addition to this photovoltaic supply, the work area and the commercial office that make up the Popular Tower have systems that make energy consumption more efficient, such as intelligent control and measurement of temperature and air quality, LED lighting, monitoring of power plants and fuel consumption.

Jose Hernandez Caamano Vice President of the Popular Engineering and Maintenance Area, highlighted how this initiative joins other actions that strengthen the company’s sustainable vision:

“We are innovators and pioneers in developing a major commitment to clean energy, eco-efficiency and the planet, because this use of green energy in the Torre Popular complex complements the efforts we have been making with our network of photovoltaic offices and other environmental initiatives, which together allow us to be a certified carbon neutral organization”, he said.

Since Dominican AES, its commercial director for the electricity segment, Mrs. Michelle Reyes, stressed the importance of expanding the use of green energies, because these “have a double advantage: they improve the competitiveness of the business, through lower costs, and also help reduce the direct and indirect impact on the environment of electricity consumption”.

Business development vision emblem

The Torre Popular complex, which was inaugurated in 1992 and recently celebrated its thirty years of existence, has an architectural design by the architect Peter Borrell.

Its construction was carried out by the company Haza & Pellerano and the structural design was carried out by Reginald García.

Its conceptualization is part of postmodern architecture, with brutalist elements, alluding to the door of the Cord Houseformer corporate offices.

The mission of the work is to represent an emblem of business development, underlining its connection with Dominicanness and progress, in addition to being a cardinal point in the city of Santo Domingo since its inauguration.

Currently, in this set of buildings work more than 2,565 people.
