With the motto “Pots that multiply”, the Paraguay Food Bank will hold the 18th National Food Collection this Saturday, December 3.
With the support of 1,500 volunteers, they will receive the contribution of citizens in more than 180 supermarkets in the country. The goal is to collect 70,000 kilos of non-perishable food that will be destined for shelter homes, hospitals, community kitchens and public welfare associations.
A kilo of rice can be a small but effective contribution to reach the goal of the 18th National Food Collection: collect 70 tons of non-perishable food for people in food insecurity. With this solidarity initiative, the Banco de Alimentos Paraguay (BAPY) Foundation supports its main cause: the eradication of hunger in the country, a situation that affects 26.9% of the population.
Thanks to the signing of a cooperation agreement with Capasu (Paraguayan Chamber of Supermarkets), consumers will be able to make their donations to BAPY at the collection points set up at the entrance of the 180 supermarkets in the country associated with the chamber.
Hugo Daniel Vázquez, president of BAPY, recalled that the collection is one of the organization’s main annual fundraising events and that this year the motto “Pots that multiply” was adopted to rescue the solidarity and community spirit of the popular pots, so characteristic of our identity, which multiply food and hands to help.
The donations obtained with this collection go to more than 120 charities registered by BAPY: foundations, shelter homes, nursing homes, nurseries, community kitchens, hospitals, transitional shelters and public welfare associations.
The Albino Luis, Oasis, La Piedad, Rosa María-Recoleta, Santa Luisa de Marillac, San José, Santa Rita de Casia and Carlota Palmerola homes; the Chiquitunga, Maná II, Mercado de Abasto children’s, Pelopincho children’s, San Felipe and Divino Jesús Km 7 soup kitchens; and the Christian Center for the Family, Santo Domingo, San Pío, Madre María de los Pobres and Lupus del Paraguay foundations are some of the beneficiary organizations.
What to donate?
Some of the non-perishable foods that can be donated are: powdered or carton milk, flour, noodles, rice, beans, oil, sugar and canned goods. 1,500 volunteers will work to receive these contributions, who will be duly identified at the entrance of supermarkets in cities such as Caacupé, Eusebio Ayala, Villarrica, Ciudad del Este, Pedro Juan Caballero, Concepción, Caaguazú, Encarnación and Coronel Oviedo, among others. Donations are received from the opening of the supermarkets until the closing of that day.
The collected food will be classified and stored in the warehouses of the Food Bank for its subsequent distribution to different parts of the national territory.
To reach 30,000 people
The Banco de Alimentos Paraguay Foundation is a non-profit organization in force since 1996, whose mission is to alleviate the hunger of people in food insecurity and improve their nutrition, avoiding food waste. To this end, it receives and collects 300,000 kilos of food annually, to reach 30,000 people in the country.
BAPY’s actions take into account the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 2 “Zero Hunger” and 12 “Responsible Production and Consumption”, and pursue a conscious distribution of resources, since our country produces food for more than 80 million people. people, but even so, 44% of the population under 5 years of age is at risk of malnutrition.
Companies or individuals can collaborate with the foundation on a monthly basis by donating food, offering vehicles to transport donations or doing volunteer work.
