Baja California Sur, the ninth entity that decriminalizes abortion in Mexico

The Congress of Baja California Sur approved this Thursday the decriminalization of abortion up to 12 weeks of gestation, becoming the ninth federal entity that protects the sexual and reproductive rights of women and pregnant people.

The reform to the entity’s Penal Code to allow the free interruption of pregnancy was approved with 16 votes in favor and 3 against.

In addition to those two jurisdictions, abortion has been decriminalized in Mexico City, Oaxaca, Baja California, Sinaloa, Colima, Veracruz and Hidalgo.
