The Bahia Health Department (Sesab) confirmed that seven people in the interior of the state are poisoned due to accidental ingestion of methanol.
According to reported for the Brazil Agency, The people were admitted yesterday for observation at the Santa Tereza General Hospital, in the municipality of Ribeira do Pombal, around 290 kilometers from Salvador.
The suspicion of intoxication was confirmed by expertise from the Technical Police Department, which verified the existence of methanol in distilled drinks consumed by the victims and the presence of the substance in blood samples.
According to the health department, the patients have already received an antidote against methanol, and health surveillance in the municipality has closed the establishment that sold the drink.
In a note, “Sesab advises that the entire population of Bahia reinforces, especially during this period of festivities, the recommended measures when purchasing and consuming distilled beverages, making sure of the origin, the non-violation of the packaging and security seals and the suitability of the establishments selling these beverages.”
