Bachaquero and San Francisco del Zulia municipalities cause more oil spills in the Lake

The director of the Fundación Azul Ambientalistas of Zulia state, Yohan Flores, affirmed that the problem in the lake “has been going on for several weeks, during which we have called on the national government to declare a state of emergency in light of this situation, in light of this constant leak that is spreading throughout our Lake”

The director of the Fundación Azul Ambientalistas, Yohan Flores, ratified the complaint about the oil spills in Lake Maracaibo, noting that the main oil leaks come from Bachaquero, Valmore Rodríguez municipality; and from the San Francisco municipality, both from Zulia state.

According to Flores, another of the areas where a constant hydrocarbon leak contaminates the largest lake in Latin America is in the town of Barranquitas, in the Rosario de Perijá municipality, in the south of the lake.

“The largest leaks that we have detected at this time are in the Valmore Rodríguez municipality, in Bachaquero (…) Also in San Francisco there is an excessive boat (…) And in the South of the Lake, in the town of Barranquitas”, said the activist in an interview for Unión Radio.

“In Maracaibo the shores are completely full of oil. In San Francisco, the coasts are also full of oil,” Flores emphasized.

He affirmed that the problem in the Lake “has already been going on for several weeks, during which we have called on the national government from Azul Ambientalistas to declare a state of emergency in the face of this situation, in the face of this constant leak that is spreading throughout our Lake” .

The Oil spills in the waters of Zulia have serious consequences for the biodiversity and ecosystem of the areaaffirmed this Sunday Gustavo Carrasquel Parra, general director of the foundation, in an interview for the Daily Truth.

Insufficient efforts from PDVSA

Faced with constant complaints from multiple NGOs, activists and videos broadcast on social networks, PDVSA began to clean the shores of the Lake impregnated with residues from the spills.

But, according to Flores, the crews deployed and the equipment used are not state-of-the-art or adequate to deal with the problem, in addition to the fact that the number of people designated for the task cannot cope with the liters and liters of oil that are spilled daily. .

“They have done days with crews of 5, 7 or 8 people, but we are sure that these crews will not be able to help solve the problem.”

He affirmed that the reason for this thought is “because crews with the latest generation machinery are needed to be deployed in all the municipalities so that they can collect all the oil that is scattered in Lake Maracaibo”, something that does not happen, according to the activist.

Added to the oil spills, the exaggerated outbreak of cyanophyte algae, which, Flores explained, “grow faster than the lemna itself”, causes that “the Lake currently has green spots, which, when they dry when in the surface, they give off a very strong, very fetid smell.”

“People who live on El Milagro avenue have told me about the strong smell that they have been able to perceive as a product of this algae,” he asserted, also noting that putrefaction intensifies when mixed with oil.
