Zurich Airport Brasil, the concessionaire that manages Florianópolis International Airport, reported on Monday afternoon (12) that the Azul airline equipment used to remove an aircraft that was blocking the runway is already in use.
Early this morning, an Azul aircraft suffered tire damage when landing in the capital of Santa Catarina, obstructing the main runway of the terminal. The incident has disrupted takeoffs and landings. The latest update from the concessionaire states that 87 flights have been cancelled due to the runway closure. There is no forecast for when the work will be completed.
According to Azul, the problem occurred during the landing of the E195-E2 jet, manufactured by Embraer, which was operating flight AD 4225, on the airport’s main runway – 14/32. The aircraft departed from Confins Airport, in Belo Horizonte, early this morning, and landed in the capital of Santa Catarina at around 2:30 am today.
Florianópolis International Airport has two runways. In addition to 14/32, which is 2,400 meters long and 45 meters wide, there is also runway 03/21. The smaller runway (1,500 meters x 45 meters) cannot accommodate jet-engine aircraft, i.e. commercial jets.
Azul customers who have flights scheduled for today are advised to contact the company to check the status of their flights and, if necessary, reschedule them or check other alternatives.
