Avanza País proposes reducing the period of congressmen to 2 and a half years and re-establishing immediate re-election

the congresswoman (Avanza País) presented a bill that proposes reducing the parliamentary period from five to only two and a half years, in addition to re-establishing immediate re-election in office.

It’s about the which proposes modify articles 90 and 90-A of the Constitution. It is also proposed to allow candidates for the Presidency of the Republic to apply simultaneously to Congress.

The statement of reasons indicates that after almost four years of the constitutional reform promoted by the Executive, it is observed “more clearly” that the purpose of the proposal “weaken democratic governance, managing to eliminate national representation, through the dissolution of Congress and limit the power of citizens to monitor their representatives”.

It also refers that the proposal promotes democratic governance, by strengthening the role of the citizen in the election of their representatives to the Congress and greater transparency, publicity and quality in national representation.

“In that sense, the citizen will evaluate the performance of the congressional representative, every two and a half years, making the decision to keep him in office, through his vote, upon observing that he has fulfilled his constitutional functions”narrowed down

Regarding the possibility of applying -simultaneously- to the Congressdetails that the presidential candidates who lose the electoral contest “they tend to ignore” of the public debate, participating sporadically, or even disappearing from the political scene until a new election is called.

“This affects political parties, but it affects citizens more deeply, since it deprives them of knowing the positions of political leaders on the issues that concern them”underlines.

Similarly, he emphasizes that the presidential candidate who becomes a congressman has “more incentives to do a good job and be responsible with their actions”since he is under public scrutiny and in an upcoming election he will have more liabilities or assets, according to his parliamentary work.
