MADRID, Spain.- The Provincial Center for Hygiene, Epidemiology and Microbiology of Havana reported this Thursday about a rabid dog that attacked a person and other animals in the Cotorro municipality of Havana.
The existence of the canine with symptoms compatible with rabies was notified through a telephone call to the authorities on the morning of December 5.
As explained by the Provincial Directorate of Health through Facebookthat same day the dog escaped from its owner and in the ball field of Santa María del Rosario attacked a person and other animals.
In the afternoon, the zoonoses specialists picked up the animal, “which had a notable deterioration in its health”, to carry out the observation for ten days, “an action stipulated in the rabies program and in the Animal Welfare Law”.
One of the attacked dogs, which its owner voluntarily surrendered, was also picked up.
“The canine dies and its study is carried out at the Pedro Kourí Institute of Tropical Medicine, resulting positive for rabies,” the information indicates.
According to the health authorities, “all focus control actions are maintained to protect the health of people and animals in the area.”
The note does not indicate whether other sources of rabies have been detected in Havana or the rest of the country.
In comments to the publication, numerous users highlighted the importance of rabies vaccination and asked that the campaigns organized for it, from the polyclinics, be carried out with the necessary frequency.
In May 2020 The Holguín Provincial Health Directorate reported on an epidemiological event of “suspicion of human rabies”, which occurred in the Mayarí municipality, in which two brothers died. The episode occurred due to a stray cat that was taken to the home of the deceased.
