Authorities prepare for the return of Mexicans who fled to Guatemala due to violence

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) reported that in compliance with international law, Mexicans who expressly state their decision to return will have the corresponding consular support from the competent institutions of Mexico and Guatemala for an orderly and safe return, always guaranteeing respect for the will of people in the context of mobility.

Authorities will coordinate with the offices of the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) in Guatemala in carrying out actions under their authority.

The SRE noted that the governments of Mexico and Guatemala are working closely to provide care and protection to the group of Mexicans who are in the border municipality of Cuilco, Huehuetenango, Guatemala.

Both countries have committed to offering assistance, food and support to the people, to ensure an adequate stay in Guatemala.

The returns will be planned jointly by the two countries, and in dialogue with the Mexican people, establishing a schedule of dates and times for the same.

They will be carried out with the support of personnel from the Guatemalan Migration Institute, as well as in coordination with the corresponding security agencies.

In the border communities where Mexicans are currently located, Guatemalan authorities have reinforced territorial and citizen security; they have temporarily adapted public facilities to house people; and they are providing humanitarian assistance and health services through national institutions brought together by the National Disaster Coordinator (CONRED).

In order for Mexican citizens to be in a regular immigration situation, the Guatemalan Migration Institute is extending the certification of humanitarian stay, which is valid for 30 days and can be extended.
