Authorities evaluate damage left by rain on the Northwest line

SANTIAGO. The corresponding authorities of the Valverde, Montecristi and Dajabón provinces are carrying out a survey of the damage caused by the floods that occurred yesterday afternoon and last night in those localities, after heavy rains accompanied by winds.

So far no human victims have been reported, but there has been a lot of damage to agricultural crops, and to homes that were completely flooded, where families also lost all their belongings.

The rainfall lasted for more than four hours and in addition to the damage to homes, in Mao, Valverde, the cemetery there was flooded, removing many dead from their graves.

Civil Defense Brigades, in the company of police officers and other volunteers, managed to evict dozens of families from the María Auxiliadora, Yerba de Ginea, 17th Street and Las Trescientas (300) neighborhoods, in Mao.

Pedro Torres, regional director of the Civil Defense, based in Mao, Valverde, reported that some families had to be housed in shelters, since their houses were full of water.

“Thank God we have no victims, but there is a lot of damage, and we hope that the Presidency’s Social Plan will come to the aid of the affected families,” Torres stressed.

While in the Montecristi province, dozens of floods were also reported in different sectors of that northwest province.

Likewise, yesterday there were floods in the center of the city of Dajabón and in the Plaza Beller, Caridad and Aviación neighborhoods.

Severina Gil, provincial governor, reported that a data survey is being carried out to determine the magnitude of the damage left by the rains in that town.

Mayor Santiago Riverón reported that the city council will continue to offer its collaboration to help all the residents who were harmed by the floods.

According to the Dominican Institute of Meteorology (Indomet)rainfall will continue for 24 to 48 more hours in different regions and provinces of the Dominican Republic.
