Authorities disarticulate "Los Alfas", a group dedicated to extortion in Edomex

The operation was headed by the Prosecutor’s Office of the State of Mexico, in coordination with elements of the Secretariat of Defense; Marine Secretariat; Secretariat of Citizen Security and National Guard.

The criminal group has origins in the state of Jalisco and operated in the Toluca Valley.

Among the 27 detainees, is Eduardo Alberto “N”, aka “El Alfa”, identified as the leader of the criminal group, generator of violence and priority objective, Harfuch said.

During the operational actions, two victims were found that said they were kidnapped, and firearms, narcotics and vehicles with theft report were secured.

Extortion in Mexico leaves no one intact. Merchants, entrepreneurs, farmers, builders, housewives, employees and even inmates are daily victims of this crime that is increasing.

Official figures show that extortion is at the highest levels at least in the last decade: more than one victim every hour. This historic rebound led the government of President Claudia Sheinbaum to implement a national strategy to combat it.

Security experts warn that, although the plan has weaknesses, it is a success that there is a public recognition that it is a problem that is increasing and it is necessary to attend with a new plan.
