Federal sources identified the apprehended subject as second in command of the criminal group that assumed control of the once powerful Beltrán Leyva cartel.

Inzunza Noriega’s son, also accused of transporting fentanyl through Washington, was killed by the Mexican military in November in an operation carried out in the state of Sinaloa.

This criminal cell is related to the production and trafficking of fentanyl, cocaine, methamphetamine and heroin.

The US Department of Justice highlighted in May the “narcoterrorism” accusation against Inzunza Noriega and his son Pedro Inzunza Coronel as the first of its kind directed against criminal commanders related to the Sinaloa cartel.

This criminal group was designated in February along with other Mexican mafias as a “foreign terrorist organization” by the Trump administration.

An internal war between two of its factions has accumulated hundreds of deaths since September 2024 in the state of Sinaloa.

Since his return to the White House last January, the Republican magnate has threatened Mexico with tariffs as a pressure measure to stop drug trafficking and irregular migration to his country.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has managed to stop widespread levies against her exports and has increased arrests and narcotics seizures.
