“Aunt Pikachu” accused discrimination by right-wing constituents: “They treated us like banana growers, pungas”

Giovanna Grandón, better known as “Aunt Pikachu”, addressed the work of the Constitutional Convention and acknowledged that she is in agreement with the changes made in the proposed new Magna Carta. However, along with warning that she would return to the streets if she wins the Rejection in the exit plebiscite, she revealed that she also suffered discrimination from some right-wing constituents.

The former member of the People’s List and part of the later Plurinational Coordinator, said, in an interview with Thirdwho had not felt entirely well working in the Convention, since “there was a lot of discrimination, above all, against those of us who live in the population”.

Asked if there was classism within the drafting body, the conventional Grandón accused that, effectively, “they treated us like banana growers, pungas. They are the full recorded.”

“There is Marinovic and the poisonous girls from Cantuarias and Montealegre. First they began to throw hatred, as nobody caught them. On several occasions he also answered sarcastically,” he added.

Grandón also commented that not all “the dreams of millions” were fulfilled in this new Constitution. “To fulfill the dreams, the changes would have to have been a little more radical,” said “Aunt Pikachu,” adding that she would have been happy that “education, for example, would have been free from the nursery onward.”

“But yes, we managed to move forward,” he said.

“It was a bit of a tedious process, a bit long. For me it was a bit different. I don’t come from working with these political forms,” said Grandón. And he concluded: “It is that here at the beginning, when those political logics began, we independents were many. So, we could stop many things so that they would not come to blow us.”
