The 100 years of radio in Brazil were celebrated, this Wednesday (7), in a special concert at the Municipal Theater of Rio de Janeiro. With free tickets, the public was present in large numbers, practically filling the available seats.Audience sells out concert for 100 years of radio in Brazil

In the first part of the commemorative concert promoted by Radio MEC – one of the public radios of the Brazil Communication Company (EBC) -, the Municipal Theater Orchestra interpreted excerpts from O Guarani, by Carlos Gomes. Conducted by conductor Felipe Prazeres, the show featured solos by tenor Eric Herrero and soprano Maria Gerk.

On September 7, 1922, the same O Guarani was broadcast directly from the Municipal Theater, in commemoration of the centenary of the Independence of Brazil.

The second and part of the concert was in charge of the National Symphony of Universidade Federal Fluminense (UFF), with the interpretation of Choros nº. 6, by Heitor Villa-Lobos. Maestro Javier Logioia was the conductor of the orchestra.

During the break, there was the launch of a special postage stamp by Correios, alluding to 100 years of radio in Brazil, with the participation of the president of EBCGlen Valente, the state superintendent of the Post Office in Rio de Janeiro, Ricardo Fógos, and the president of the Municipal Theater Foundation, Clara Paulino.

“It’s a celebration of 100 years of radio in Brazil. There’s nothing better than coming back here, to reconcile the past with the future. Radio will continue to be a super important vehicle for EBC and to Brazil. Today is a special moment, for us to celebrate in the best possible way, with top quality classical music and a postage stamp”, said the president of EBC.

The novelty is part of the Correios’ tradition of issuing stamps alluding to festive dates or relevant national historical facts. The launch refers to the beginning of radio broadcasts in Brazil, on September 7, 1922, exactly a century after independence day.

“The Post Office works in the area of communication and radio is part of it. The stamp will be available at the main post offices in Brazil. Mainly philatelic agencies. Here in Rio, we have Avenida Presidente Vargas and Rua 1º de Março. In Brasilia, at the central agency. All capitals will have this seal”, said the state post office superintendent.
