The Specialized Attorney for the Defense of the Environment and Natural Resources (Proedemaren) announced that it will submit to the courts a real estate developer that, in violation of environmental laws, destroyed mangroves in danger of extinction and filled lagoons of a area under protection of Punta Canawith the aim of making way for a tourism project.
Francis Contrerashead of Proedemaren, explained that the company Inversiones Zahena affected an area of high sensitivity for aerial and marine migratory species to raise the Cana Bay, Beach Club & Golf Resort-Dominican Republic project.
He said that Inversiones Zahena carried out the clearing under cover of a permit issued on November 9, 2021 by the provincial director of La Altagracia, of the Ministry of the Environment, Holy Lover of the Rose.
He explained that, although the real estate company alleges that it obtained a permit from a regional ministry officialduring an inspection visit that he led last Tuesday, was able to verify that debris from a large area of mangroves, after deforestation, was used by the developer company as material to fill a lagoon, with the purpose of create a transit route.
The members of the Public Ministry received the cooperation of the Academy of Sciences in the person of the environmentalist Eleutherio Martinez.
Among the species affected there are in the Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).
President Abinader builds a dock for fishermen from Boca Chica
President Louis Abinader inaugurated this Thursday the Boca Chica fishing pier, an initiative that will renew and promote fishing activity in the area, in addition to boosting the local economy and promoting the creation of new sources of employment.
The work that was carried out after 20 years of waiting, included the recovery and expansion of the dock old Boca Chica, in which from now on more than one hundred boats will be able to dock, directly impacting more than 300 fishermen and benefiting thousands of people.
