Attorney Germán is recognized for her long career

Yesterday, the European Union recognized the Attorney General of the Republic, Miriam Germán Brito, with the European Award for Human Rights in the Dominican Republic for her professional career dedicated to guaranteeing justice and democracy and her tireless fight against corruption.

At the ceremony, Judge Germán Brito thanked the recognition granted and highlighted the work of all members of the Public Ministry who, during their administration, have made an effort to prosecute acts of corruption that seriously affect public assets.

“I thank the European Union for the present recognition that I receive in my person, but that corresponds to the work carried out by the Public Ministry as the body in charge of prosecuting crime and exercising public action on behalf of Dominican society,” he said.

The attorney reaffirmed her commitment to the independence of the Public Ministry and said that prosecutors are committed to the rule of law and due process. She trusted that the investigative body, in addition, “will continue to be a benchmark for institutional transformation that society demands.”

“A society in which there are optimal controls so that public and private corruption receive the expected consequences is one where human rights can take root and people can aspire to progressive and sustainable human development,” he said.

“Reasonable insubordination”

On a personal level, Germán Brito, who has a long history in the judicial system and has held several important positions, affirmed that he was born with a “reasoned insubordination”, and that this has helped him not to “be at the feet of anyone ”.

“This future of mine through the justice system has had very difficult stages and I was born, I don’t know where it came from, with a reasoned reluctance, I am grateful for that reasoned refusal because it has prevented me from being at the feet of anyone and has allowed me to insist on not to travel paths of abuse, of mistreatment, “said the highest representative of the Public Ministry.

During the second edition of the award, the ambassador of the European Union, Katja Afheldt, also spoke, who said that they are committed to the fight against corruption.

“The European Award for Human Rights is a symbol of the commitment of the European Union in the fight against corruption and in favor of transparency and justice. By awarding this award to Judge Miriam Germán Brito, both the European Union and its Member States want to highlight our recognition, support and deepest respect for the commendable work of the judge”, she expressed.
With this award, the European ambassadors wanted to send a message about the importance of the fight against impunity, and the equality of all citizens before the law.

Miriam Germán has been recognized other times

With a career of more than 50 years, attorney Germán Brito has gone through all levels until she was president of the Second Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice, and then became attorney general of the Republic, a position she has held since August 2020. Throughout her professional life, she has received numerous awards and distinctions for her great performance, among which the Judicial Merit Award, granted by the Ibero-American Commission of Judicial Ethics in 2016, and the “Medal of Merit for Women” stand out. awarded by the Presidency in 2018.
