Attorney General reiterates that Edmundo González left the country voluntarily

The Attorney General of the Republic, Tarek William Saab, reiterated that the former candidate of the opposition extremists, Edmundo González Urrutia, left Venezuela for Spain voluntarily.

During an interview this Wednesday with the American media CNN en Español reported that Saab said that “after realizing he had lost” on the night of July 28, the day of the presidential elections, González Urrutia headed to the Dutch Embassy in Caracas, where he remained until his trip to Spain, a decision that was also motivated by the lack of knowledge of the election results and pressure from the far-right candidate María Corina Machado.

Due to the same impositions of the Venezuelan extreme right, the attorney general added, Edmundo González Urrutia had to accept the presidential candidacy and leave his retirement and the daily life he led. He even accepted the rules of the National Electoral Council (CNE) at first, but when he lost the elections he allowed the narrative of fraud forged by Machado to be imposed, actions that led him to “a borderline state.”

He even recalled that the former candidate’s legal representative, José Vicente Haro, gave him a communication in which he explained the reasons why he did not appear to speak about the ongoing investigation.

Extremists move protests to Madrid

On the other hand, the head of the criminal action pointed out that the extremist leaders had to move the protests they tried to develop in Caracas to Madrid due to the low or non-existent capacity of the latest mobilizations to attract people.

“In other words, we are returning to the era of Spanish colonialism, according to this opposition,” the prosecutor said, stressing that the father of the nation, Simon Bolivar, “threw the Spanish yoke from Venezuela. This is not a colony of Spain.”

Last Saturday, September 7, the Vice President of the Republic, Delcy Rodríguez, confirmed through her Instagram account that the former candidate had left the country for Madrid after requesting that Government to process political asylum and under the safe-conducts issued by Venezuela.
