The Attorney General’s Office aopened an investigation against the mayor of the municipality of Espinal (Tolima), Juan Carlos Tamayo Salas, in the face of the emergency caused by the fall of eight boxes in the Gilberto Charry square where the corralejas were held for the San Juan and San Pedro festivities and which has so far left four dead and more than 330 injured.

Through his Twitter account, the Attorney General’s Office warned about the lack of controls by the municipal administration to avoid these events.
“The Attorney General will open a disciplinary investigation against the mayor of El Espinal, Tolima, for a tragedy in Corraleja. The president did not respond to the requirements on disaster care action plans made. We stand in solidarity with the families of the injured and deceased,” said that body.
After learning of the action that the Attorney General’s Office has initiated against him, the mayor of El Espinal noted that it has not yet been notified and warned that it will deliver the corresponding reports on the way in which the event was organized.
“I have not been notified yet. We the officials we assume this type of disciplinary responsibilities, criminal actions and we have full confidence in moving forward. We respect the actions of the control bodies and we will be willing to collaborate in the face of any requirement,” said Juan Carlos Tamayo, mayor of El Espinal.
According to the official, the corralejas are events that are part of the cultural tradition of El Espinal that have been held for many years, as it happens in other populations of the country.
For his part, the governor of Tolima, Ricardo Orozco indicated that he hopes to agree with the Ministry of the Interior on the issuance of a decree to invite the mayors of the department to refrain from holding events that involve animal abuse. such as corralejas, cavalcades and bullfights.

The governor stated that the law does not allow him to prohibit this kind of activities, since the mayors are autonomous and it is necessary that through the Congress of the Republic a law be issued so that these shows are abolished.
