Attorney General: human rights violations have decreased 38% since 2018

The Attorney General of the Republic, Tarek William Saab, announced that the annual records of complaints for alleged human rights violations received by the Public Ministry have decreased by 38% since 2018.

The statements were offered within the framework of the Human Rights Week that this year was commemorated on the occasion of the 74th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, approved by the United Nations Organization on December 10, 1948, reported a Press release.

“We want to highlight that since 2018 the cases filed for alleged human rights violations have been decreasing each year. Thus, in 2018, 13,234 cases were opened, while in 2019, 11,461 were initiated, 13% less. In 2020 the decrease was 15%, reaching 9,746 causes; in 2021 the decrease was also 15%, for a total of 8,237 cases received, and for this year 2022 the projections indicate a new decrease”, he said.

He explained that the Public Ministry has carried out an arduous investigative work and punishment of human rights violations.

Saab took the opportunity to update the figures that summarize the actions of the institution that guarantees legality against officials who divert the path.

Likewise, it reported that until November 2022, 1,493 civil servants have been accused of state security for alleged violations of human rights and 61 individuals indicated as collaborators.

A total of 779 officials from different security forces and 46 individuals were deprived of liberty. On the other hand, 1,640 civil servants and 81 individuals have been accused. And an important figure of 277 convicted officials and 101 collaborators has been achieved.

“We have called on the population to record and denounce those officials who rattle and commit abuses against citizens. Our fight for justice and human rights will not let up for a second. The results are being seen, fewer and fewer officials dare to break the law, “he reaffirmed.

The Attorney General also highlighted the continuous care work that the Public Ministry carries out with those deprived of liberty. Since August 2017, the institution has carried out 3,173 Comprehensive Assistance Days for the Deprived of Liberty, which have involved 2,908 visits to preventive detention centers.

In these sessions, 179 thousand 188 deprived of liberty have been treated, to whom 97 thousand 636 legal assistance, 9 thousand 154 legal or psychiatric medical examinations have been carried out, 151 thousand 863 medicines have been delivered and they have been discarded for hypertension and glycemia, tuberculosis screening, dental care and vaccination. Likewise, the detained women have had Pap smears performed and gynecological care has been provided, among other services.

During this period, the Public Prosecutor’s Office has carried out 944 Expediting Plans for Causes that have allowed the attention of 53 thousand 069 deprived of liberty. In these plans, 6 thousand 472 full liberties have been decided, 7 thousand 225 precautionary measures substituting freedom have been granted. In addition, 10,388 admissions of facts and 8,603 convictions have been obtained, among other achievements.
