Horacio Cartes, former president of the Republic and Hugo Velázquez, current vice president, participated in television interviews last Sunday.
Both referents of the Colorado Party were not critical and attacked each other in their spaces.
Cartes undermined Velázquez’s ability by pointing out that even as vice minister he would place him. In addition, he did not rule out that the vice president could decline his aspirations from one moment to the next.
For his part, the vice president accused Cartes of being a danger to democracy and institutions. He warned that if Santiago Peña comes to power, all party leaders will be bypassed and that the managers will return to administer the state institutions.
DUARTE
Rocío Duarte, a political scientist, affirmed that there is no consensus candidate. And that “Operation Scar” did not survive the municipal ones. “The fight will be very fierce. The violence with which they are treating each other. Both generate too much opposition from the opposition within the party. They need to find a more consensual candidate, “he said.
He stressed that, in general, before the inmates there are very violent campaigns. But then they put together a joint front as the recent experience between Abdo and Cartes says.
“I see Peña better positioned, but I doubt they are the final candidates,” he said.
Shirley Gómez, a political analyst, expressed that she sees Velázquez as a representative of the traditional leadership, and Cartes as an outsider who arrived with money to return the ANR to power. “The first battle was the municipal battle where Velázquez was better off. But you have to see how the process unfolds. The red inmates are tough confrontations characterized by attacks, but in the end it ends with Republican hugs, “he explained.
The analyst sees Velázquez as better positioned than Peña. This is due to the fact that a large part of its candidates acceded to elective positions during the last municipal elections.
“I think the attacks will intensify as the months go by. It seems to me something very normal among them and common among the red candidates, ”he said.
Finally, he pointed out that it is a confrontation between two very different factions. On the one hand, a leadership like that of Velázquez, where he prioritizes the bases and the participation of the leaders. And, on the other hand, a leadership like Cartes, who has a business vision.
“In the background I think the confrontation is real. In the government it could be seen. When there was a threat of impeachment there was a dependence on Abdo towards the Chartist group. They are trying to superimpose one group on another ”, he concluded.
