The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) announced this Saturday (28) that, despite the recent escalation of conflicts in the Middle East, no signs of radiological impact were detected in the region. The body called for “moderation” in attacks and retaliations by countries involved.
Israel launched a attack on Iran early this Saturday morning, declaring a “special and immediate” state of emergency across the country, according to information from the Reuters news agency. US President Donald Trump also confirmed “major combat operations” in Iran with the goal of defending the American people“eliminating imminent threats from the Iranian regime.”
Iran, in turn, fired missiles at Arab countries of the Gulf.
In a post on social media, the IAEA does not mention whether specific nuclear installations were targeted, but says it is monitoring the situation closely.
“The IAEA is closely monitoring developments in the Middle East and urges moderation to avoid any risks to the nuclear safety of people in the region. The IAEA is in permanent contact with countries in the region and, to date, there is no evidence of any radiological impact,” the statement said.
On Thursday (26), Iran and the United States had resumed negotiations with the aim of finding a diplomatic solution to the long-running dispute over Iran’s nuclear program. The United States, Israel and other Western countries say the program aims to build nuclear weapons. Iran denies the accusation.
