ULA workers warn that the salaries they receive are 75% below the basic basket, which is around $500
The general secretary of the Union of Higher University Professionals and Technicians of the University of Los Andes (Siprula), Dionis Dávila, denounced that the administration of Nicolás Maduro has an accumulated salary debt for each employee that amounts to 16 thousand dollars since 2022 .
Dávila assured that ULA workers consider such a figure to be appropriate, since it corresponds to the “fair and decent” salary that they should receive not only there, but in all public universities in the country.
He pointed to Radio Fe y Alegría that the calculation of that figure was made based on the basic family basket for August, which was around 500 dollars, while he recalled that the minimum wage has been stagnant at 130 bolivars for some years.
According to the data provided by Dávila, the Government has “denied” significant income to university workers in recent years, with amounts of $5,293 in 2022; $6,339 in 2023 and $4,331 from January to August 2024.
He also stressed that the ULA warns that salaries are 75% below the cost of the basic basket in Venezuela.

In a statement issued on Tuesday October 8the Federation of Associations of University Professors of Venezuela condemned the state and parastatal repression against workers and students after the recent protests in rejection of the results of the presidential elections of July 28, which have left a tragic toll of at least 23 dead , dozens injured and more than 2,000 detained, according to the document.
They assure that a reform of public policies is urgently needed to address the humanitarian crisis and the situation of the educational system.
