With the Christmas Eve and Christmas celebrations at the door, and just over a week until the end of the year, the blackouts They show no signs of slowing down in Cuba.
This Tuesday the maximum impact will once again be close to 2000 MW, according to official forecasts, due to the combination of units out due to breakdowns and maintenance, high limitations in which they remain operational and another high fuel deficit.
Yesterday’s day was once again very tense and was marked by the departure of unit 5 of the Mariel thermoelectric plant due to a leak in the boiler, as reported by the Electrical Union (UNE).
Already this morning another block, the 5th of Renté, was disconnected for the same reason.
With this, there are seven thermal units currently undergoing repairs, of which the incorporation of Renté 6, with 45 MW, is expected for the night peak.
Repeated problems
The constant breakdowns in thermoelectric plants are not the only problem that repeatedly hits electricity generation in Cuba.
The limitations on the units in operation will once again be above 500 MW today, while the lack of fuel and lubricants will subtract 1,114 MW.
For this reason, 94 distributed generation plants will not operate this Tuesday, nor will the engines of the Moa fuel plant.
In this way, after a maximum impact yesterday of 1984 MW at night, at dawn today there were already 941 MW affected by capacity deficit.
By midday that figure should increase to 1,150 MW, to climb again to 1,961 MW at the nighttime peak, according to the UNE.
However, for this to happen, the planned entry of Renté unit 6 must occur, the estimated demand must not increase (3,400 MW) and no other breakages must occur, something difficult to ensure given the current state of the old Cuban plants.
