At least five statues of Chavez torn down during protests in Venezuela

MADRID, Spain.- Amid growing political and social tension in VenezuelaFollowing the announcement of the re-election of Nicolás Maduro as the country’s leader for another six years, thousands of Venezuelans have taken to the streets to express their discontent and denounce electoral fraud. In these demonstrations, one symbolic act has gained relevance: the destruction of statues of the late former president Hugo Chávez.

Journalist Lisseth Boon shared on the X platform images of at least five statues torn down so far. The protesters’ slogans, such as “And it will fall!”, were heard in various cities across the country, referring to their desire to put an end to the Chavista dictatorship established in 1999.

Details of the toppled statues

Choir, Falcon State:In a square on Shema Saher Avenue, angry protesters knocked down the statue of Hugo Chavez with hammers. Shared images show dozens of people gathered around the statue, actively participating in its destruction.

    Dungeon, Guárico state: The statue of Chavez in this city was also shot down. The image of Chavez, located in a significant public space, was reduced to rubble by the actions of protesters shouting “freedom.”

      La Guaira, Vargas stateOn Carlos Soublette Avenue, the 3.5-metre-high statue, erected in 2017, was knocked down to cries of “This government is going to fall!”

        Mariara, Carabobo state: In MariaraAfter the statue was torn down, the head was torn off and motorcyclists dragged it through the streets of the town, in a demonstration of rejection and frustration towards Chavismo.

          Tejerías, Aragua stateIn this region, images show protesters celebrating as the statue fell to the ground.

          In addition to statues of Chavez, protesters have also destroyed and burned images of Nicolas Maduro, reiterating their opposition to the election result and the permanence of Chavismo in power.
