The victims of the accident in Monagas belonged to the Real Barcelona football club. The injured were taken to a medical centre in Maturín
On the afternoon of Tuesday, September 24, an accident occurred on the “La Campana” curve in Caripe, north of Monagas state, in which at least five people died and another eight were injured after the bus they were traveling in fell into the void on the aforementioned road artery.
The victims of the accident are part of the “Reales de Barcelona” football team, who were coming from playing a minor league tournament in the so-called “Jardín del Oriente”. The transport in which they were travelling suffered a mechanical failure; although the authorities are investigating thoroughly to find out the causes of the accident.
According to a police report, the deceased in Monagas were identified as Alfredo de la Cruz Merodi, 38 years old, Alfredo Alejandro Merdodi (15), Luciano Alfredo Merdodi Leonett (05), Jhassikocv Gil (05) and Geidi Gil, whose age is unknown.
In addition, it was learned that the injured respond to the names of María Leonett (36), who suffered generalized polytraumatisms and René Cabrera (34) with minor traumatisms. Another of those identified is a minor of 12 years old, who also suffered generalized traumatisms.

All the injured, who apparently are part of the support staff of the “Real Barcelona” youth soccer team, were transferred to the Dr. Manuel Núñez Tovar (Humnt) hospital in the city of Maturín in the state of Monagas in order to receive medical treatment.
Meanwhile, the bodies of the deceased were taken to the morgue of the José Antonio Urrestarazu hospital in the municipality where the accident occurred.
The mayor of Lechería, Manuel Ferreira, sent a message of condolences on social media to the families of the victims and assured that Venezuelan sport is mourning this loss.

The most recent report from the Road Safety Observatory (OSV) says that during the month of August 2024 there was an increase in traffic accidents nationwide with a total of 146 reported accidents. The death toll rose to 74, of which 43% were motorcyclists.
The study was based on media monitoring and found that the death rate from road accidents was 50 people per 100 accidents. In addition, there were 205 injuries.
The report highlights that 14% of the deceased were motorcycle passengers, including adolescents aged 15 and those in the age groups of 19 to 24, 30 to 39 and 55 years and older.
