At least 60 companies in the San Quintín Valley go for collective bargaining

To put an end to violations of the labor rights of the workers of Valle de San Quintín, it is necessary to carry out authentic collective contracting, hence the agricultural day laborers of the National Democratic Independent Union of Farm Laborers (SINDJA) carry out an intense work of affiliation aimed at strengthening contracts to be able to denounce said violations.

In the San Quintín Valley, where there are at least 60 agricultural companies that carry out important exports to the United States, “an accompaniment is being carried out with the daily workers to bring their demands to the public light and the corresponding authorities are involved; since in 2015, during the work stoppages to denounce labor abuses, the demands were presented in the petition; however, to date they have not been fully complied with,” he said. the general secretary of SINDJA, Abelina Ramírez.

He assured that the National Union of Industrial Workers and Salaried Workers of the Field, Similar and Related CTM and the Union of Workers, Farmers, Loaders, Machinery Operators in General Similar and Related of the San Quintín Valley; They are the ones who control the collective contracts of the agricultural companies in the Valley, which do not carry out activities for the benefit of the day laborers.

With the testimony of a farm worker, who preferred anonymity, he announced that “one of the effects on day laborers is the Collective Labor Agreements that national and transnational companies have in the San Quintín Valley; Therefore, they have worked with all the day laborers in the company of the union to denounce labor abuses.”

In that sense, he said that “the fight is intensifying so that the rights of workers are respected. For this reason, the call is for day laborers to join the SINDJA; It is not a whim of a few, but a labor law. The companies, in complicity with the charro unions (CTM, CROC and CROM) must be denounced, and move on to a legitimate contract.”

Paros, a way out

Also, in the last two months there have been work stoppages in companies in the region. “The strikes began at the Santa Mónica farm, where the workers stopped work for 2 days to demand an increase in the price of the harvested boxes of strawberries, which have not had an increase in many years,” explained Lorenzo Rodríguez, Secretary of Organization of the SINDJA.

He explained that the strikes also occurred at the Rancho Nuevo Produce, where the ratification (legitimation) of the Collective Labor Agreement was carried out, since irregularities were detected when voting by the workers, as establishes the Labor Reform of 2019.

“During the vote, the labor authorities were not present to ensure that the (voting) process would be carried out in order, in addition to 600 workers, only 200 could vote, there was intimidation of the workers to force them to vote in favor of the CTM, he added. Rodriguez.

It should be noted that there are approximately 60,000 workers in the area, a figure that rises in the high seasons. In addition, 50% did not receive utility payments and the 40% who did receive were very low and the remaining 10% received utilities of 3 thousand pesos and more.

Some of the companies that failed to pay profits this 2022 are Agrícola Fragaria, which exports to the United States for Fresh Pac International; Rancho Nuevo Produce SA and Rancho Agrícola Santa Mónica.
