According to information published by the digital portal 14ymediothe authorities of the Mexican state of Quintana Roo warned about the disembarkation of 50 Cuban rafters in the last 27 days.
The most recent arrival occurred last Sunday, when 14 people were located on Isla de la Pasión, a protected natural area of Cozumel surrounded by mangroves.
A Mexican official told the independent media that a “failure” in the raft’s engine in combination with the force of the wind led the Cubans to that tourist destination.
The presence of Caribbean nationals was reported to the authorities by a group of tourists, who denounced the presence of strange people on the Island, usually reserved for snorkeling, kayaking, among others.
In accordance with 14ymediothe municipal police and members of the National Guard arrived at the scene, finding six women, a minor and seven men, all with the intention of reaching the United States, according to their own testimonies.
“The migrants were provided with water and food and transferred to the corporation’s facilities for a medical check-up,” Rodrigo Rodríguez Peña, director of municipal Public Security, told the Cuban outlet.
On Thursday of last week, six Cubans landed on Isla Mujeres, also in Quintana Roo. The migrants crossed a highway and went in various directions, getting lost in the streets of the La Gloria neighborhood.
At the end of October, a Navy vessel rescued 30 Cuban rafters (seven women and 23 men) who were adrift 10 nautical miles north of Isla Mujeres. All the migrants were taken to the Puerto Juárez Naval Station, where they still remain.
Between the months of August and September, the Mexican authorities also registered the arrival of another 80 Cuban rafters.
