At least 41 deaths reported in India due to heavy rains

At least 41 people have died as a result of the heavy rains registered in recent days in several territories in southern India, particularly in the state of Andhra Pradesh, where 12 deaths were recorded this Sunday, while local authorities continue with the work rescue.

According to a recent report by Indian regional authorities, another six bodies were recovered this Sunday in Rajampet and two in Chinnamandem in the Kadapa district of Andhra Pradesh.

Three unidentified bodies lie in the Rajampet government hospital, while four deaths were recorded in the Nellore district.

More than 20,000 people have been evacuated and transferred to relief camps after heavy rains wreaked havoc in Chittoor, Kadapa, Nellore and Anantapur districts in southern Andhra Pradesh.

Hundreds of vehicles were stranded on the main road and rail routes in Andhra Pradesh were cut off due to flooding.

Earlier this month, the neighboring state of Tamil Nadu suffered severe flooding, where more than 11,000 people were displaced and at least 14 died.

Light to moderate rains are expected in many places in Karnataka, Kerala, Tamilnadu and Puducherry for the next two days and a reduction thereafter.

Isolated heavy rains are highly likely over Tamilnadu, Puducherry and Kerala for the next five days and over the coast and southern inland Karnataka for the next two days, according to the Meteorological Department.

Train and bus services continued to be affected in this city while many villages and towns in the Rayalaseema and Nellore district remained under water. Streams and village reservoirs were full to the brim and some of them were overflowing, a concern for the low-lying areas.

The highway bridge connecting the cities of Kadapa Tadipatri along the Papagni River collapsed due to the impact of the flood in the early hours of this Sunday.

Other territories such as Karnataka and Tamil Nadu have also been affected by rainfall. In the first region the deceased amount to 24 and 658 houses were destroyed by the flooding of the rivers.

In Tamil Nadu, after the Thenpennai River rose, around 18,500 hectares of farmland was razed. In addition, three people died and 368 head of cattle were lost.

The 13 teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) that are stationed throughout the region continue to act and facilitate rescue and relief operations.
