MADRID, Spain.- From January to October 2022, at least 30 electric motorcycles caught fire in the province of Pinar del Río. Of these fires, 17 occurred in homes, with different degrees of damage, according to Lieutenant Colonel Raúl I. Henríquez Bello, chief of the Fire Department in that province.
Quoted by the local newspaper GuerrillaBello called on the owners of this means of transport to respect security measures.
According to the information, in that period there were a total of 494 calls to the fire department in Pinar del Río, related to, in addition to the aforementioned motorcycles, fires in weeds, barren areas and garbage dumps.
The electric motorcycle fires, popularly known as “motorinas”, not only affect the Pinar del Rio region, but also spread throughout the country.
Last September, for example, the explosion of an electric motorcycle in a house in Luyanó, municipality of Diez de Octubre, left two people seriously injured.
According to the residents of the place, the fire started by the combustion of an electric motorcycle that was charging. In addition, the flames reached a second motorcycle and several fuel drums near the source of the fire. The interior of the house was quickly reduced to ashes.

This week the Traffic Directorate in Sancti Spíritus established a mandatory driver’s license to drive any type of motorcycle in that province.
The measure applies “to all that electric cycle, no matter the design or size, that has an accelerator and change, has a license, plate and helmet,” said Yester Reyes Marrero, specialist of the Provincial Headquarters of the National Revolutionary Police in Sancti Spiritus.
The Traffic Directorate in Sancti Spíritus indicated that the compulsory nature of a driver’s license to circulate in motorcycles has been established to protect life and guarantee road safety.
