The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in the Democratic Republic of the Congo updated this Friday the number of deaths from the floods that occurred last Tuesday in the capital Kinshasa and raised it to 169.
The UN office cites the authorities as the source of the balance, although they have so far not publicly updated the number of at least 120 deaths reported on Tuesday night, according to the AFP agency.
“The Congolese authorities reported at least 169 dead, around 30 injured (…) and at least 280 houses destroyed,” OCHA said in a statement on Twitter.

The municipalities of Mont-Ngafula and Ngaliema, in the west of this city-province of 15 million inhabitants were the most affectedindicated the OCHA.
Kinshasa received torrential rains on Tuesday night that caused landslides, sinking houses and flooding large avenues of the city.
Authorities decreed a three-day national mourning beginning Wednesday.
