The federal government launched this Tuesday (15th), during the 27th United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP27), the Sustainable Brazil Agenda. The document presents measures adopted in the last four years that would be in line with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations (UN), a global call to end poverty and protect the environment. In all, more than 800 shares were listed.
According to the government, the production of Agenda Brasil + Sustentável took place collaboratively and mobilized the participation of all ministries. O document, with 80 pages, is also accessible to the public. The contributions of various initiatives such as the Auxílio Brasil, the Safra Plan, the Saneamento Legal Framework and the Acolhida Operation, among others, are cited.
The conference, which this year is being held in Egypt, has been held annually since 1995 and was created based on the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, agreed three years ago. The event brings together all signatory countries of the convention. During two weeks, representatives of the signatories of the convention evaluate climate changes on the planet and discuss mechanisms to deal with the situation. Several relevant topics are on the agenda, such as clean energy generation, carbon market and sustainable agriculture.
The Minister of the Environment, Joaquim Leite, is the head of the Brazilian delegation. In a speech given today, he also presented programs and public policies implemented by the country in recent years. “Since 2019, we have been working together with the private sector to find profitable climate and environmental solutions for companies, people and nature. We have reversed the logic of previous governments that only acted to fine, reduce and blame. This government makes policies to encourage, innovate and undertake, thus creating legal frameworks for a robust green economy with job and income generation for all Brazilians”, said the minister.
Leite recognized that the country has challenges to face, such as illegal deforestation in the Amazon, the 100 million Brazilians without access to sewage networks and the more than 2,600 open dumps.
