The President of Argentina, Javier Mileihas once again been in the spotlight after denouncing two attempts at “currency runs” and accusing the head of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) mission, Rodrigo Valdés, of having “bad intentions towards Argentina.”
These statements have caused a great stir in the political and economic spheres of the country, and have put the relations between Argentina and the IMF in the spotlight of discussion. Javier Mileiknown for his direct and confrontational style, made these accusations in a recent interview with a streaming channel.
According to the president, this week there were two attempts to destabilize the Argentine economy through currency runs, which were orchestrated by specific actors in the financial sector. He directly pointed to Banco Macro and former advisor Teddy Karagozian as responsible for these sabotage attempts.
The president did not stop there. In his statements, he targeted Rodrigo Valdés, director of the Western Hemisphere Department of the IMF, accusing him of having an agenda against Argentina.
According to MileiValdés has shown a clear preference for the previous administration, led by Sergio Massa, and has placed obstacles in the way of the current administration in the framework of negotiations with the international organization.
Milei questioned why the IMF allowed certain actions during Massa’s administration, while his administration, which according to him has exceeded the most demanding fiscal goals, faces constant obstacles. “We will continue to do things right. It is the Fund’s decision to endorse all the disaster that Massa created,” the president said.
Criticism
The statements of Javier Milei have provoked various reactions both nationally and internationally. Alejandro Fantino, who was interviewing Milei, asked him if his comments could have a negative impact on the negotiations with the IMF.
Milei responded that it was necessary for the truth to be known and reiterated his accusations against Valdés, whom he also linked to the Sao Paulo Forum and the Puebla Group. These accusations are not new in Milei’s discourse, who has maintained a critical stance towards the IMF and has repeatedly questioned the organization’s policies and decisions.
