The Ministry of the Interior decided immediately dismiss the deputy executive director of the National Police, Jorge Berriel, after the Justice accused him of three crimes of revealing a secret, in the framework of the Astesiano case.
Berriel had already been removed from his position on Tuesday the 7th but remained in office until Marchwhen the changes were going to be formalized.
However, after the decision of the Justice this Friday, the minister Luis Alberto Heber, decided to dismiss him immediately, as reported by Underlined and confirmed to The Observer from the Ministry of the Interior.
Among the three situations in which the Justice understood that the deputy executive director of the Police revealed secrets are the data provided to the former chief of custodians Alejandro Astesiano about a minor who filed a complaint of sexual abuse at a party organized by militants of the National Party.
Another case in which he revealed secrets refers to a robbery with a firearm in which an official from the presidential security team intervened and another is linked to a robbery complaint by Astesiano’s son.
On Wednesday the 8th at a press conference, Heber assured that the removals in the police leadership —the national director of Police, Diego Fernández, was also removed— they had nothing to do with other matters that the Ministry of the Interior “has on its hands”in reference to the Astesiano case (there are other police officers investigated in the case).
However, President L.Luis Lacalle Pou contradicted the minister’s version and assured that the investigation into the Astesiano case It was one more “element” in making the decision to remove Berriel.
