The College of Journalists of Peru described as “biased” the final report prepared by the High Level Group of the Organization of American States (OAS) on the situation of freedom of the press and expression in Peru.
In a statement, he “strongly” rejected the preliminary report of the international mission on the grounds that “wrongly” that in Peru there is “on freedom of expression”.
He recalled that on November 22, during the presentation to the hemispheric community, the journalistic union delegation denounced and documented more than a hundred damages and attacks on freedom of expression in the country, so far in the government of President Pedro Castle.
“Our Order, in addition to informing the commissioners that both the Executive and Congress presented bills that sought to control the content of the media and gag and intimidate the press, as well as the unions that represent it”he expressed.
“Unfortunately, in its biased report on freedom of the press and expression, the hemispheric mission reports having received information that in Peru the media are free to inform and misinform without any type of censorship. In his unusual pronouncement, he relegates the government’s lack of openness with the press to the background.”he added.
For this reason, the Association of Journalists of Peru deplored that the spirit of the preliminary report presented to the OAS Permanent Council does not identify any threat against the profession.
“For all these reasons, it strongly calls our attention that the perception of the OAS Mission, in terms of freedom of expression in Peru, does not correspond to the reality that unfortunately exists today in the country or to the standards that govern the professional practice of journalism and communication in other democratic countries of the region”sentenced.
