With the start of the Summit of the Americas at the door, the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE), Marcelo Ebrard, reiterated that the participation of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador will depend on what the Joe Biden government does. If he invites all the countries (of the region), then the President will be there, if not, then he has already stated his position. Let’s see what the United States solves, now the ball is on their side.

He estimated that there is not much left before the decision of the US administration is known, on whether or not there will be excluded countries. I think that by Monday we will know, but Mexico is already ready and prepared.

After participating in the Meeting on Indigenous Diplomacy, in an interview, the foreign minister asserted that the Mexican delegation that will attend is already integrated, while the documents and proposals that will be they are very advanced.

To an express question about whether the President will attend, he replied that the issue of invitations It is basically a decision at this point, because of the United States. What Mexico has said is that of course we are very interested in participating, the President too, but we would not admit or we would not agree with accepting the exclusion of any country.

He explained that it is not an ideological issue, “if you are in favor of one country or another, but rather that it has never been accepted at summits that a country says ‘not you’, that another country does not go, for example the host who says not going to any country. So that’s the issue, but it’s already on their court, I hope they make a decision soon. For our part, we are ready.”

Regarding the proposals that will be presented, he announced that one of them will be on labor mobility.

On other issues, he pointed out that the extradition of the former head of the Criminal Investigation Agency Tomás Zerón de Lucio, who led the investigations into the disappearance of the 43 normalistas from Ayotzinapa, is a priority. He indicated that the FGR has already presented the evidence requested by Israel –where the former official is located–, for which there is confidence that the process will move faster.
