MADRID, Spain.-The Assembly of the Cuban Resistance (ARC) expressed this Thursday its support for the government of Ukraine after the announcement of the closure of its embassy in Havana. The organization described the measure as a “brave and consistent” decision in the face of the Cuban regime’s alliance with Moscow in the war of aggression against Ukraine.
The Secretary General of the ARC, Orlando Gutiérrez-Boronat, who is currently in kyiv on a diplomatic mission to the European Union in favor of the freedom of Cuba, congratulated President Volodímir Zelensky for the firm stance of his government. “The actions of the communist dictatorship of Cuba are incompatible with the freedom, democracy and sovereignty of Ukraine,” said Gutiérrez-Boronat, who considers that the closure of the diplomatic headquarters reflects an inevitable moral rupture in the face of the collaboration of the Cuban regime with Russia.
Message from kyiv
From the Ukrainian capital, the Cuban opponent sent a recorded message in front of Cuba’s former diplomatic headquarters in kyiv, now empty.
“We are in front of the Castro embassy in Ukraine. This embassy has now been abandoned; there are no Castro diplomats inside,” said Gutiérrez-Boronat, recalling that the Cuban regime has openly supported Russia in its military offensive.
“Of course,” he added, “they are in favor of Russia in the aggression against Ukraine, and since they do not have the shame of being here and having to face the Ukrainians every day, while they send mercenaries to attack this country, they cowardly left the embassy.”
The opponent also stressed that the building, now empty, represents the moral collapse of a dictatorship that has lost international legitimacy: “This beautiful building will one day belong to the people of Cuba again. The Republic of Cuba will once again be represented in this headquarters. Today it is an empty shell that a tyranny has abandoned because it participates in an aggression against this country.”
Gutiérrez-Boronat took advantage of his message to send a message of encouragement to Cubans suffering from the recent effects of Hurricane Melissa and the structural crisis on the Island. “I also want to say something to my people in Cuba who are now under the terrible scourge of the hurricane. This city has been at war since 2022, with almost daily bombings, and yet they have electricity and water. Why? Because they do not have an inept tyranny controlling it. They have a democracy that, even in war, is perfected and allows its people to live with dignity. In Cuba, without war, we have our people on the ground, in disarray.”
The general secretary of the ARC thus linked the Ukrainian resistance against the Russian invasion with the fight for freedom in Cuba, highlighting the example of a people that rises up every day despite the attacks and that “demonstrates that democracy, even in war, is more efficient than a tyranny in peace.”
Support for Ukraine in the embargo vote
