Saura and Juliette Binoche
The death on Friday, at the age of 91, of Carlos Saura, Goya de Honor 2023, led to a start full of emotion, with the presence on stage of his partner of the last 30 years, the actress Eulalia Ramón, and two of the sons of the director, Antonio and Anna Saura. The person in charge of putting it in his hands was Carmen Maura, star of Ay Carmela!.
According to a message read at the gala, in his last words Saura said he felt “happy” to have given inspiration to the “brilliant” current generation of filmmakers and claimed to see himself tonight “like a wandering star in the immensity of the cosmos.”
“Imagination is faster than the speed of light,” he wrote. He also said he felt lucky to have made more than 50 films and to have had seven children, several grandchildren and a great-granddaughter, going beyond the dreams he had as a young man.
Antonio Saura recalled the importance of the four women in Saura’s life: his mother, Adela Medrano; the actress Gerladine Chaplin, who accompanied him in his “most authorial” stage of his life; Mercedes Pérez and Eulalia Ramón “who has helped her on her journey towards minimalism and overcoming fears”.
Even Juliette Binoche, the other great honoree of the night, upon receiving the International Goya, surrendered to the maestro Saura humming “Porque te vas” by Jeanette, a nod to the soundtrack of “Cría cuervos”, a film she saw as a child which, he said, marked him deeply.
