Alfonso Boekhoudt, governor of the Caribbean country, affirmed that the talks between Aruba and Venezuela are advanced. They seek to import fruits and other products, as well as reduce inflation in that territory
The governor of Aruba, Alfonso Boekhoudt, stated on Tuesday, September 13, that the island’s government maintains opening the border with Venezuela as a priority, this in order to be able to reactivate the commercial exchange between both countries that allows them to import products from the mainland. .
According to the portal Caribbean ChroniclesGovernor Boekhoudt stated at the opening ceremony of the Aruban Parliament that the dialogue with the Venezuelan authorities is advancing so that the maritime border is reactivated, closed since 2019 by the administration of Nicolás Maduro for the attempt to ship humanitarian aid supplies that was coordinated by Juan Guaidó, recognized by part of the international community as president in charge of Venezuela.
For the governor of the island, this contact with Venezuela and a possible reactivation of the maritime border to import fruits, vegetables and other foods can help alleviate inflation in that territory, which is under the jurisdiction of the Netherlands. By March 2022, inflation in Aruba hovered around 4%.

Relations between Aruba and Venezuela have been intermittent since 2019. In addition to the issue of humanitarian aid, elements such as the smuggling of so-called “strategic material” such as copper, metal and others into that country, as well as the issue of migration that starts from our nation to other destinations in search of a better quality of life have led the authorities to still not agree on the reopening.
Aruba’s intention to resume these actions with our country occurs in a context where President Nicolás Maduro and Colombian President Gustavo Petro announced the normalization of relations between the two countries despite the observations made by the United States.
