Arturo Balderas Rodríguez: The year we lived in anguish

l

a year comes to an end particularly stormy throughout the world, but especially in the United States, the nation from where a good part of the storms were generated. Of course, the fateful wars in the Middle East and Eastern Europe, where Israel and Palestine on the one hand, and Russia and Ukraine on the other, generated unease and anguish due to the effects they could have on the entire world. But it was in and from the American nation that the blows against the status quo of President Trump, those that have most clearly had the greatest consequences against multilateralism and caused a break with the traditional patterns of commercial and financial relations, those that most profoundly threatened to destabilize the entire world and, evidently, the American Union itself.

In the nation that today heads a group determined to change the face of a State that has prevailed for more than 200 years, the decisions of its president, embodied in dozens of decrees, have had a devastating effect on American life and society. It would be very long to repeat what is in some way known to any reader attentive to what is happening in that nation and the entire world about the way in which, gradually, Donald Trump has tried to demolish the foundations that have been his support for years. It is worth mentioning very schematically some of the most outstanding:

Trump initially denied the proposals of the document known as Project 2025, prepared by the conservative organization Heritage Foundation, the essence of which has been the inspiration for his undermining work. But once elected, he followed almost literally each of them and so that there was no doubt, he incorporated into his cabinet the person who directed said document, Russel Vought, who manages the spending and budget office, one of the most powerful in the government.

It is worth giving an account again of its main axes: restrict immigration and deport as many migrants as possible, regardless of the way of doing it, even violating legal and constitutional norms; substantial reduction of the government, eliminating offices and agencies without regard to the need for them for the functioning of the government, nor the violation of labor rights of its employees or civilians of the general population; reduction of taxes, especially for those who obtain higher incomes, and in return, reduce social spending; substantially increase the power of the president, a proposal in which the Supreme Court contributed, even violating the precept of the division of powers, one of whose implications is the surveillance that Congress must exercise over the decisions of the Executive Branch; eliminate the independence with which the Department of Justice has traditionally operated by transferring de facto their functions directly under the orders of the president; end the independence of the Central Bank in such a way that monetary decisions remain under the orders of the executive.

Foreign policy deserves a separate comment, especially regarding tariffs and with NATO, that the Trump government has implemented to confront a handful of nations, notably the European Union and China.

Most of these government guidelines have been implemented in the 11 months that the president of the neighboring country to the north has governed. In the elections next November, the Democratic Party will possibly obtain the majority in Congress and put a stop to the president’s excesses. However, there is a cloud that threatens the electoral process: the possibility that, as they tried to do in 2000, Trump and the Republican Party will try to ignore the results of the election, but this time with extralegal means and resources to achieve their objective.

Until then, everything is good or bad. Now we have to wait for the Democratic Party to develop a plan with its ideas and proposals to contrast them with those of Project 2025.

A light of optimism: to the surprise of locals and strangers, the Supreme Court dealt a setback to the president when it ruled that the use of the National Guard to patrol the streets of several is a violation of the Constitution. It was welcome news for the entire nation and alleviated the fear that Donald Trump would continue with his intention to militarize the entire country.

My best wishes for next year, appreciation to the readers and those who make the publication of The Day.
