An artisanal miner, identified by the name of Edgar Saul Farmwas buried on the morning of this Monday, April 10, in a tunnel in the exploitation areas located in Cerro Las Nubes, in Santo Domingo, Chontales.

Saul’s companions, the moment the tragedy happened, proceeded to carry out the rescue work. In the tunnel, where the subject is buried, some 50 men have put tools to open a path in the ground with the purpose of getting more oxygen and trying to prevent him from suffocating, however, until hours of the afternoon they continue fighting to rescue the worker.

Likewise, the personnel of the Ministry of Health (Minsa) went to Las Nubes hill to provide first aid to Edgar Saúl Granja, if necessary.

In the videos released by local media, it is observed that both the underground miner’s colleagues and the authorities were using chainsaws, pieces of wood and other types of tools with the aim of saving the worker’s life. In addition, they were working very cautiously, because there is soft earth around the tunnel, which could cause another burial and they would not be able to rescue Granja alive.

For his part, the miner makes sounds on the ground to indicate that he is still alive and thus guide rescuers to find his exact location, the Santo Domingo Comunica Facebook page reported.

On the Las Nubes hill there are several areas of mining exploitation in which hundreds of men work, extracting the precious metal in an artisanal way, in order to bring livelihood to their homes.
