Arriving at Christmas: Mar, a migrant who found human warmth in the Dominican Republic

Mar

Just three weeks ago, Mar, a Cuban content creator and YouTuber, arrived in the Dominican Republic.

His initial experience has been marked, as he says, by the human closeness and the good reception of the people he has met since his arrival.

“Literally all the people I have met have treated me with great warmth, everyone is very pleasant, very human,” she expressed when interviewed on the radio program La Nota Christmas Sessions broadcast on La Nota 95.7 FM.

He assures that he has not felt loneliness, despite the change of country: “I have not felt that need for cuddles, like I had in Cuba, because I am in the first place with my parents, which is super important.”

Regarding the adaptation to the country, Mar highlights that the impact has been strong, especially in the visual and everyday aspects. “The shock is super strong. The change is abrupt, you find many things that you will never and will never see in your country.”

He details that even simple aspects such as traffic caught his attention: “Cars have affected me psychologically because there are too many cars.”

For her, the sensation has been like traveling through time: “I went from being in the 80s to falling in the real 2025. This seems like something out of a movie.”

He adds that many of those images before were just distant dreams: “Everything that you saw in Cuba, something futuristic, that you wanted to get there and now you are here and you don’t believe it.”

Mar started her YouTube channel during the pandemic, motivated by her need to communicate.

“I felt the need to express myself. I mean, I am very communicative,” she explained, pointing out that the channel began as a way to share her daily life as a Cuban and a student.

Over time, his content evolved into reactions, until the Dominican Republic appeared consistently in his videos. The public’s response was decisive. “I never saw a bad comment. Everything was good, many blessings, we love you here, come to our country.”

That affection influenced his decision to focus on content about the country.

“The Dominicans treated me with so much affection… and that caught me,” he said.

Finally, he fulfilled what he had told his audience: “I said, I go and I am here.”

Beyond social networks, Mar highlights his vocation to help, linked to his profession.

“I don’t know if it’s because of my vocation, that I’m a doctor, but we always have that part of humanism that we want to exploit.”

He assures that his intention is to repay the support received: “When I have that possibility, I am going to do the same thing that you did with me.”

Although he recognizes that no country is perfect, he explains why he decided to stay: “The DR has many things that remind me of my country, but with everything that I need to undertake and to get ahead.”

For Mar, the affection of the people and the opportunities have been key to this new beginning.
