Arrival of Cubans to the US exceeds forecasts for this year

Madrid Spain.- From October 1, 2021 (beginning of the current fiscal year) to July 6, 2022, 157,339 Cuban migrants arrived in the United States.

This figure, published on July 15 by the Department of Customs and Border Protection (CBP)exceeds the number of 155,000 forecast for October 2022 by the United States government.

According to the recent report, last June a total of 16,170 Cubans entered the United States crossing the southern border from Mexico and another 38 did so from Canada. In May, 25,971 Cubans had arrived and in April, 35,092.

During the last nine months, Cuba has been the fourth country from which the largest number of migrants have arrived in the United States. The Island is surpassed by Mexico (638,812), Guatemala (181,309) and Honduras (163,305).

This migration crisis began to increase since November of last year, due to the suspension by the government of Daniel Ortega of the visa requirement for islanders who wanted to travel to Nicaragua.

In 2021, 39,303 Cuban migrants entered the United States, a figure much higher than the 14,015 registered in 2020.

The current Cuban migratory wave has surpassed the rafters crisis of 1994 and the one that took place in 1980, when around 125,000 Cubans left the port of Mariel for the United States coasts.

As for repatriated people, last week the United States Coast Guard (USCG) announced that since October 1, 2021, 3,067 rafters had been returned to the Island.
