Army prepares key movements before promotion of new brigadier generals

The Army is preparing rotations in command for the promotion of new brigadier generals, including changes in Task Force Omega.

The transfer of command ceremony for the new Commander of the National Army, Major General Luis Emilio Cardozo, was held at the José María Córdova Military School. The ceremony was attended by President Gustavo Petro, Minister of Defense Iván Velásquez and the military leadership.

LA FM learned exclusively that the National Army is preparing new movements of some of the commanders in several regions of the country, which will be officially announced in mid-December.

These rotations are due to the promotion of the colonels who will receive the rank of brigadiers general before the end of this year and that they will be assigned to the different brigades, battalions and special commands.

This editorial team confirmed that last week, the colonels selected last year already completed the Higher Military Studies Course 2025.

Thus, it is expected that in the coming days President Gustavo Petro signs the decree that makes his promotion official.

Some of the troops have even begun rehearsals for the transfer of command ceremony, which would be scheduled for next Friday.

The first movements

LA FM learned that one of the main movements that has already taken place is in the Joint Task Force Omegaone of the most important and significant of the National Army, since “it is the entity with the highest level of planning and strategic direction for the country’s military institutions.”

This Force is currently commanded by the Brigadier General Carlos Ernesto Marmolejo Cumbewho has led the men and women of this unit since 2023.

In its replacement will come the Brigadier General Yor William Cotua Muñozwho is currently the commander of the Twenty-Seventh Jungle Brigade of the National Army, with jurisdiction in the department of Putumayo.

Added to these movements is that of Brigadier General Gerardo Ortiz Ramírezwho is currently the commander of the Command against Drug Trafficking and Transnational Threats, CONAT, in charge of the fight against drugs.

General Ortiz Ramírez will be the new commander of the Twenty-Seventh Jungle Brigade of the National Army in Putumayoafter the departure of Brigadier General Yor William Cotua Muñoz, who will move to the Joint Task Force Omega.

These changes within the National Army also seek to reinforce security strategies in various regions.

Profile of Brigadier General Yor William Cotua Muñoz

He Brigadier General Yor William Cotua Muñozwho will be the new commander of the Joint Task Force Omega, was born in Medellín, Antioquia, on December 3, 1973, he entered the Military Cadet School in 1992 and graduated as a second lieutenant of the Infantry Weapon in 1993.

In 2015 he was chief of Operations of the Commando Brigade, in 2016 he was the second commander and chief of staff of the Commando Brigade and in 2017 he was the second commander and chief of staff of the Special Forces Regiment No 1.

In 2017 he became the commander of the Special Forces Regiment No. 1, and three years later, in 2020, he was appointed chief of staff of the Special Forces Division with a tenure of 5 months, where he was subsequently appointed as military attaché in Washington.

In 2022 he was selected to advance the Higher Military Studies Course and was then appointed as commander of the Army Special Forces Division, until 2024, when he was appointed by the Higher Command to be the commander of the Twenty-seventh Jungle Brigade in Putumayo.

He Brigadier General Yor William Cotua Muñoz has participated in 20 of the country’s highest-level and most important military operations in recent years, including Operation Hope. His resume includes 36 military decorations.

Profile of Brigadier General Carlos Marmolejo Cumbe

He Brigadier General Carlos Marmolejo Cumbe He is one of the most experienced within the National Army. His skills and abilities allowed him to become the commander of Joint Task Force Omega from 2023.

His leadership is such that he gives orders to men of the National Army, the Colombian Navy and the Colombian Aerospace Forcesince the three Forces are part of Omega, which is why it is one of the most important in the institution.

General Marmolejo Cumbe was commander of the Voltigeros Infantry Battalion No. 46, as well as the Guajira Military Gaula, and was in units such as the Mobile Brigade No. 23 and the High Mountain Battalion No. 4 Gr. Benjamín Herrera.

He was also part of the Anti-Drug Brigade and was appointed commander of the 22nd Jungle Brigade.

His resume highlights that he is business administrator, security and defense specialist, with military training as a weapons and shooting instructor, military professor and parachutist.

He also completed the Commanding United Nations Peacekeeping Operations course at the Western Hemisphere Institute For Security Cooperation, in the city of Fort Benning, United States.

For the case of National Army They include Colonels Raúl Perilla Monroy, Diego Jaramillo Muñoz, César Augusto Suárez Giraldo, Gabriel Andrés Maje Gómez, Jorge Mario Aguirre Martínez, Alex Jefferson Mena Mena, Edgar Rodríguez Pérez, Javier Humberto Cómbita Guzmán, William Roberto Medina Díaz and Hair Ardila Robles.

In the National Navy The list is headed by ship captains Juan Pablo Pinilla Acosta, Darío Eduardo Sanabria Gaitán, Rafael Leonardo Callamand Andrade and Jaime Leonardo Montañez Torres, and marine infantry colonels Nelson Ricardo Fernández Rojas and Evert Andrés Mejía Giraldo.

Finally, in the Colombian Aerospace Force Colonels Jhon Henry López Mejía, Gustavo Adolfo Navarro Carrascal and Jorge Andrés Henao Bohórquez appear.

To this list would be added the Colonel José Luis Esparza, who led Operation Jaqueand who would receive his promotion after winning a lawsuit against the Colombian State following a controversy over alleged links with the ELN.
