Experts consulted by Political Expansion They consider that by giving more faculties, resources and power to the Armed Forces, it is causing the president to act under pressure and be forced to “defend” them despite the questions about his performance.
Ruben Ortega Montesa member of the Security and Justice Observatory of the University of Guadalajara, considers that the current government has had to bow to the militia and proof of this is not only the Ayotzinapa case, but also the arrest and subsequent discharge of the former secretary of the Defense, Salvador Cienfuegos.
“We see a foolish president, a president who has lost his essence. With the way that happened in Cienfuegos and with the abandonment of arrest warrants for the Ayotzinapa case, it no longer indicates that the Army is the one in power, the baton,” says Ortega Montes.
One of the episodes in which the president has had to defend the Armed Forces occurred with Cienfuegos, who was arrested in October 2020 in the United States, accused of drug trafficking and money laundering, and who was later released and brought to Mexico by a high-level agreement between the governments of both countries and here exonerated by the Attorney General of the Republic (FGR).
When it happened, the president asked not to single out the entire Army for this arrest and also charged that the United States had no evidence against the general: “they were garbage, garbage, garbage,” he criticized.
A few days ago, at the request of the FGR, a judge canceled 21 arrest warrants that had been released against presumed implicated in the Ayotzinapa case, of which 15 were against military. The president defended that decision of the FGR arguing that they wanted to involve more people than he actually corresponded.
“As there are interests in all this, they sought to burst the investigation by talking about more people. In the case, for example, of the military, holding 20 responsible, when in the investigation there are five; Of course, high-ranking, the other 15 I don’t know, but I imagine they are soldiers. But, why do they put the 20? Thinking that with that a rebellion was going to be generated in the Army if there were more and we were going to have to backtrack so as not to touch anyone, ”said the president.
