Armed Forces distribute food at 87 points in Montevideo

The Ministers of Defense, Javier García, and Social Development, Martín Lema, attended the collection center of Uruguay Adelante, an organization that supplies popular pots and picnic areas, to supervise the departure of ten trucks from the Armed Forces that distribute 20 tons of food in 87 points of Montevideo. García affirmed that the people who need it will obtain food.

In a press conference, the Minister of Defense thanked the troops for the work they carry out and highlighted the transparency of the Ministry of Social Development (Mides) in preparing the logistics so that the food reaches its destination.

In addition, he stressed that the traceability of supplies is clear, “what comes out, where it goes and who receives it.” He also stated that later it will be evaluated if it is necessary to adjust the procedures.

Lema, meanwhile, stressed that the distribution should be implemented so that the food reaches the people who need it as quickly as possible. He pointed out that, for this, precise information was requested on what each popular pot requires.

He also indicated that in the National Dining System there was a drop of 8,000 users per day in the first half of 2022, compared to the first half of 2021, while in the popular pots there was a drop of 30%, in the same period.

On the other hand, he said that at the end of October the National Institute of Statistics (INE) will report on the country’s food situation and that this input will be a priority to improve the public policies of that portfolio.

He added that efforts are being made to strengthen the system from a structural point of view, through the National Food Institute (INDA), and that a reinforcement in the budget for the years 2023 and 2024 was requested, to improve food distribution.
